Dozens of federal agents have surrounded the farm of a Nevada man, Mr. Cliven Bundy. His family has been farming the same land since 1877.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a federal agency that didn’t exist when his family began farming in Nevada, has decided that his cattle are now endangering a desert tortoise.
The government agency had no objections until Mr. Bundy decided to stop paying a fine for allowing his cattle to eat the naturally occurring grasses in the Nevada desert.
Bundy has paid all taxes and fines to his county and state governments, but is refusing to pay levies mandated by the BLM.
The BLM has surrounded the farmer’s land with dozens of armed guards on multiple occasions, and they are beginning the process of rounding up his cattle and claiming them as federal property due to the rancher’s refusal to go bankrupt paying levies from an agency that he feels is unethically pilfering from he and other farmers.
“With all these rangers and all this force that is out here, they are only after one man right now. They are after Cliven Bundy. Whether they want to incarcerate me or whether they want to shoot me in the back, they are after me. But that is not all that is at stake here. Your liberty and freedom is at stake,” Bundy told CBS news.
