The story of Cliven Bundy is the story of America. It’s manifest destiny. Westward expansion. Freedom.
It’s the cowboy who herds his cattle on the open fields before the boss hog villain hassles him and throws him in the pokey. His friends rally and fight for basic human freedom. They break him out of jail and take over as the new sheriffs who stand up for basic human rights.
Cliven Bundy’s family came to Nevada in the 1870s with fifty-one other Mormon families who built an entire community of ranchers and cowpokes together. Nevada wasn’t even a state when the first of their group made the trek west.
This is a guy who knows the Constitution by heart. It's been his only tool to fight the federal forays as a long line of ex post facto laws have been passed with the intent of removing the farmers from the area.
Bundy’s latest exposure to a government foray came last week, when eighty-five police vehicles and hundreds of heavily armed agents surrounded his property. Yes, Glenn Beck, I am calling it his property.
That’s how land rights worked back then. You found the land. You claimed the land. You got a notary to sign off.
Sporadic court cases over the next several decades confirmed that the Bundy’s and his fellow ranchers in the area did indeed own the mineral rights, the water rights, and the foraging rights of that land.
The fact that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offered to buy those rights further confirms that they did own those rights.
In 1997, Bundy rejected a proposal to compensate him for his land rights in exchange for his departure. The following year, the federal government sued Bundy and a court decided that he owed $200 per day per animal.
But the BLM couldn’t get Bundy to surrender. All the other heartland ranchers who moved to the middle of the desert to raise cattle in an arid and inhospitable climate just to serve the needs of the American people were gone. Fifty-one families in the original Mormon rancher settlement in southern Nevada had been tricked, swindled, coerced, or bribed off their land. In unrelated news, a "drought" has caused cattle prices to reach all-time highs. Though his friends all abandoned hope, Bundy refused.
WHY HARRY REID WANTS THE FARMER GONE
Why has the federal government been harassing and suing this farmer so relentlessly for twenty years? Because Harry Reid wants a solar plant built there. And who is lobbying for the construction of the plant? Rory Reid, Harry’s oldest son and executive at the Chinese solar panel manufacturing company ENN Energy. Even Harry and Rory, with all their combined muscle… even their bullying, harassing tactics… even the fake environmental threat… even the lawsuits… even the threat of force hasn't made Bundy want to leave. So what was Harry Reid’s next step? He put his best guy on it.
Obama nominated Neil Kornze to serve as director of BLM last March. Kornze is known for championing solar power and lobbying for new solar plants. He is also known for serving as a top advisor to Harry Reid; a role he filled until his appointment as Deputy Director of BLM in 2011.
The BLM, under the new leadership of Neil Kornze, decided that the best way to handle the Bundy situation was to bring down the full force and power of their own militarized agents to remove “Bundy’s trespass cattle” from Clark County. This way they could clear the way for the “non-governmental organizations” who have “expressed concerns that the regional mitigation strategy for the Dry Lake Solar Energy Zone utilizes Gold Butte as the location for offsite mitigation for impacts for solar development and that those restoration activities are not durable with the presence of trespass cattle.” Their words, not mine.
Forget about the fact that these cows have coexisted with the desert tortoise for decades and that scientific studies prove their cohabitation increases the tortoise population. Forget that this family owned the rights to use the land in Clark County NV decades before the BLM even existed. Forget about the fact that the BLM sent hundreds of militarized agents to steal Bundy’s cattle in a last-ditch effort to have the problem of Bundy’s “trespass cattle” removed. Forget that this was all orchestrated by Senator Reid and his son in an effort to pad their own wallets at the expense of the American people. Harry Reid is a patriot and Cliven Bundy is a “domestic terrorist!”
It’s time we call out the real villains and reignite the spirit of freedom in this country. Bundy’s supporters assembled by the hundreds. They came on horseback. They came with their guns at their sides. They wanted peace. But by God, they took a stand for what they believed to be right. I stand with them.
